Catchpool Shetlands

Performance Shetlands

When my daughter Lara finished riding Shetland Ponies she decided she wanted to breed big performance Shetlands from the bloodlines of the ponies she had raced and shown. Ponies to be bred to move well with good temperaments and hopefully some fast enough to race in the Shetland Grand National. ‘Riccalton Gauntlet’ was purchased as stallion (we had owned and raced Riccalton Andrew). He is proving himself not just with his mares but going very nicely undersaddle. ‘Claylands Celeste’ and more recently ‘Claylands Little Fran’ have joined us (we raced Claylands Cameron). ‘Kransit of Gott’ our largest mare moved into this herd.

Foals 2006 (see foals page)

Fran had a grey filly, Molly Weasley of Catchpool (sold), Celeste has a bay/now going grey filly, Minerva of Catchpool. Briar Solitaire also had a grey filly, Mme Maxine of Catchpool. Kransit had a dun filly, Miss mitten of Catchpool.

Emperess had a black and white filly, Zoe of Catchpool (sold).

Foals 2007 (see foals page)

Fran had a grey colt, Dumbledore of Catchpool (FOR SALE). Kransit has had a dun filly, Pansy of Catchpool (sold). Celeste has also had a grey colt, Gryffyndor of Catchpool, who we are keeping to show in 2008.

Can you see a pattern with the names?! yes they are named after Harry Potter as they are children's ponies (except for Kransit who's foals mum names!

We have always had a large number of geldings, which we produce and show under saddle. Many of them are also broken to drive. Sadly ‘Victory of Catchpool’ 32” grey (prolific winner under saddle, best small gelding centenary show) and ‘Riccalton Andrew’ 40” dun (winner under saddle, W.H.P. and Shetland Grand National competitor. His many successes included 2nd in the final of Brineton 1st Ridden at Peterborugh) are no longer with us and are sadly missed.

Shadow of Catchpool, 38” Blue Roan, is semi-retired and looking after a friend of a friend’s grandchildren. Claylands Cameron is also looking after grandchildren and is threatening to take them to Pony Club Shows next year.

Vandal of Catchpool is retired, but sometimes nags to go to a show and gets taken for the veteran classes.

Manselfold Firefly has been bought by Jenny and Sam Preece for the children and I would like to wish them the best of luck with him. He is a smashing pony who will love being the centre of attention! Ulverscroft Hurricane who took Lara to Olympia twice has been sold on and took his new owner to Olympia 2003, 2004 and qualified 2005.

Whizzkid of Crafton is still our star! Bought at reading at 2 years old, broken in by Lara, he is truly a Shetland that can do anything! He won best-driven Shetland at the Breed Show whilst on loan to the Clothie Stud. He was part of the team in the Shetland Grand National at Belfast International Show. In 2003 he won 3 county shows in a week with his rider Abbie Dark. His highlight of his career was with Frankie Currell winning several classes in the International show in Sweden 2006 before taking the open ridden championship, then the supreme ridden championship! Outstanding achievement! Well done to Whizz and Frankie!
